Board of Directors Meeting

Monday, July 18, 2016 @7:00 PM

Board Members Present: Bill Maas, Gus Tallman, Bob Kelley, Mike Maffin, Joel Farley, Terry Wilts, Vern Schoeneman, Jim Blum, Steve Richards and Bev Schumann

Board Members Absent: Wendell Riley and Bonnie Simonson

Guests present: Pam Jordan

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 by President Bill Maas at the Orleans City Hall Council Chambers.

Adoption of Agenda

It was moved by Bob Kelley and seconded by Vern Schoeneman to adopt the agenda with flexibility. Motion passed.

Approval of Minutes

Moved by Mike Maffin and seconded by Terry Wilts to approve the June 20, 2016 regular board meeting minutes. Motion passed.

Treasurer’ Report

The treasurer’s report showed an overall balance of $34825.06 as of July 18, 2016. It was moved by Vern Schoeneman and seconded by Gus Tallman to accept the treasurer’s report. Motion passed. A bill for $180.00 to extend the web domain license for an additional 5 years was presented along with an additional bill for $130.00 for hosting the web site. A motion was passed to pay these bills but Joel should first check with Anita Larsen at Blue Lake Websites to make sure that the domain license isn’t already included in the web hosting fee.

Old Business

Membership Report

The membership committee presented a draft copy of the letter to be included in the annual membership drive. Suggestions made by the board for additional information in the letter will be considered by the membership committee.

Report on status of drainage In Spirit Lake/County

Pam Jordan was present and reported that she had received an email stating that a preliminary design is close to being completed but there is nothing available for presentation yet. Pam will be contacting Beck Engineering and reminding them the deadline of Aug.10th is approaching

Curley Leaf Pondweed Update and the DNR permit status

No report

Drainage Problems along 252nd Avenue (Orleans)

No permanent solution has been resolved

Report on DD #22

The City of Spirit Lake continues to test the water to see where the sediment is coming from.

Radio Blurbs on KUOO

Bill recorded a blurb for KUOO emphasizing the importance of protective associations in the area. He asked for additional topics about the lakes that could be considered for future radio blurbs. Steve Richards will make an inquiry at the Community College to see if there is a journalism class that could help with this project.

Annual Meeting

The annual meeting is August 6th at the Nature Center. Guest speaker will be Jay Michels. Board members with terms expiring are Bill Maas, Gus Tallman, Mike Maffin and Bev Schumann. Coffee and donuts will be served at 8:30 with the meeting to begin at 9:00 AM.

New Business

Okoboji Blue Water Festival

This event will be held August 13th in the Preservation Plaza. This is a daylong celebration to raise public awareness of water quality issues in the Iowa Great Lakes and across the state. There will be a table available for EOLIC to display materials about their organization.

Other issues, announcements, group sharing, etc

Next Regular Meeting is scheduled for Sept. 19th at 7:00 PM at Orleans City Hall


It was moved by Bob Kelley and seconded by Steve Richards to adjourn the meeting at 8:30 PM.
